Practicing & Teaching INVERSIONS - 50HR Yoga Teacher Training Module - PORTLAND, OR

Continued Education with Steph Góngora, Erin Kelly, & Bianca Scalise

Are you interested in starting your own inversion practice?

Progressing your current work upside down?

Or maybe sequencing safe inversion-inspired classes for your students?

Join Steph Góngora (@casa_colibri), Erin Kelly (@erinkellyart), and Bianca Scalisé (@bianca.scalise.yoga) for a 5 day, 50HR INVERSION Training at the spacious Baker’s Building in Portland, OR!

An energetic and community-building experience, the 50HR Module – Practicing & Teaching Inversions – can be a stand-alone training for those specifically looking to learn more about inversions, or part of the Authentic Movements Modular 500HR Program.

Our five days together will be full, but gratifying with daily movement class, applied anatomy lab, practice teaching/sequencing, and afternoon restorative work. While the focus of the training is finding confidence upside down (arm balances, headstand, forearm stand, handstand, pressing), many of the full body strengtheners and alignment drills can be sprinkled throughout your asana practice to help find fluidity in all movement, on and off the mat.

The building of intelligence in the body for inversions stems from creative sequencing in flow format, so expect the non-traditional funky flows that Erin, Steph, and Bianca are known for, in addition to more structured and discussion-based workshop sections that will be tailored to the group’s personal needs.

More than anything, expect to take home a full toolbox for practicing and teaching safe inversions, as well as a general understanding of the WHY behind the WAY from an applied anatomy standpoint. Attendees who meet the prerequisites and complete all hours + assignments will be eligible to apply the module toward the Authentic Movements Module 500HR Program.

Inversion Practices To Be Covered: Deep Core Activation, Arm Balances, Headstand, Forearm Stand, Handstand, Pressing, and MORE!

Who is this training for, sample schedule, and MORE!

Who is this training for?

This 50HR Advanced Yoga Teacher Training is for anyone wanting to integrate safe inversion drills & sequencing into their personal practice and/or design effective and accessible movement classes surrounding getting upside down.  We believe that having a solid understanding of inversion mechanics, along with knowledge about common risk factors & body tendencies will help empower your teaching and practice of these tricky asanas.

This training is open to everyone although we highly recommend at least 1-2 years of regular, solid practice, as well as a serious interest in inversions. You do not have to be able to balance in handstand, forearm stand, or headstand to attend, but please understand that we will be spending many hours on the mat each day, so the strength and body awareness to do so will be paramount. Already an inversion ninja? Come to pick up new tips/tricks and/or to cement your teaching practices to all-levels of audiences. Those who already have a basic knowledge and awareness of body movement and positioning will be the ones to benefit the most from this training, although we never want you to put your body at risk, so watching and taking notes during any drills not suited to your practice is welcome too! Not sure if it’s right for you? Just ask! [email protected]

You do not have to be part of the Authentic Movements 500HR Modular Program to attend, but please keep in mind that Authentic Movements cannot retro-actively assign module credits if you later decide to enter the program. Which means that if you’re eligible for the Authentic Movements 500HR Modular Program (meaning you already have a 200HR certificate from a registered school), we recommend you apply before attending! There is no cost for application and no time limit to complete the training.

If you’re not interested in the 500HR program, that’s fine too! We welcome teachers and non-teachers alike, but please know that there will be small group or partner teaching/sequencing exercises sprinkled throughout the afternoons. We believe these are accessible & useful to most movement artists with 1-2 years of regular practice. **You do NOT need a 200HR training to attend this event, just a regular movement practice.**

What to Expect

The Authentic Movements 50HR Practicing & Teaching Inversions Module will offer a safe community space to explore and implement effective techniques to build the strength and awareness to find balance upside down.

Days will be broken up into three distinct segments with each day focusing on specific inversions and/or movements to build toward inversions. Inversions covered include popular arm balances, headstand variations, forearm stand, handstand, and handstand pressing.

Mornings will consist of a brief journaling, pranayama, meditation, and/or mantra practice followed by morning asana. Here we will explore the basics surrounding the inversion(s) of the day including important warm ups, strengthening drills, and how to implement pieces of your upside work into standard flows and transitions.

There will be small workshop sections, limited partner work, and time for brief Q&As, although most of the morning is reserved for movement as we prepare our bodies for the rest of the day.

After the morning break, we will get into the details. Most days will include a small anatomy lecture to understand relevant mechanics and typical risk factors for a myriad of bodies. We will then discuss the use of props and partners to make the practice more accessible and/or progress our inversion work even further.

Time will be spent practicing these drills, as well as discussing the sequence from the morning to understand simple class structures that can lead to safe growth. Expect additional movement time as we add on to the morning information as a class, in small groups, and with partners.

Post afternoon break, we will revisit questions from the lecture section, introduce more practice teaching opportunities, and address any additional work related to the day’s specific topics. Finally, we will close with daily restorative practice and small homework assignments to help implement and digest the information.

Here are just SOME of the fun topics we will be covering!

  • History of Inversions
  • Purpose of Inversions
  • Common Inversion Myths
  • Harnessing the Deep Core as a Stabilizer, Not Just a Mover

Meet Steph Gongora & Erin Kelly

Steph Gongora (@casa_colbiri) is a certified yoga and aerial teacher currently based in Uvita, Costa Rica. She completed her first formal 200-HR training with Meghan Currie, and continued to pursue an additional 300-HR training with Christina Sell at The San Macros School of Yoga. During her many years in Austin, TX, she regularly attended additional training and continued education with Erinn Lewis of Sukha Yoga, and recently started another online 200-HR study with Alanna Kaivalya.

An athlete her whole life, Steph practiced gymnastics until high school, taught pole fitness during college (where she studied Biology and Chemistry), and started a serious daily yoga practice over three years ago. Her teaching style combines precise breakdowns of form and anatomical cuing with a creative flow style, stressing unusual transitions and authentic movements practices. She has developed a deep love and respect for inversions of all kinds, which is what promoted her to write her first two books in early 2016 – The Beginner’s Guide to Handstand & The Beginner’s Guide to Handstand Pressing. She later added The Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Yoga Practice for those looking to deepen their personal asana exploration.

Steph is happily married with five furry children and officially moved down to Costa Rica in the fall of 2016 to start construction on a Functional Medicine/Yoga retreat center on the South Pacific coast. She is overjoyed to share FLŌ Retreat Center with other beautiful souls, and hopes you enjoy her paradise as much as she does! When she isn’t doing yoga, she enjoys reading, writing, anything outdoors, writing more books (probably about more Yoga), and spending time with her (not so) little family. www.casa-colibri.com

Erin Kelly @erinkellyart is a traveling yoga teacher based in Venice Beach, California. She is known for her personal grace and fluidity of movement in both practice and teaching, and can often be found upside down or cultivating creativity through unusual transitions. Her teaching style is refreshing and playful, while still incorporating precise cues and pose breakdowns to help students understand the movements of their bodies and the path to personal growth.

She continues to develop a strong personal practice, studying various lineages, and consciously chooses not be defined by a particular school or style. Erin has studied under Megan Currie and is a regular in the LA yoga studio scene. She has also spent many hours training with Tearson Bickmore, as well as received extended hours in Dharma and Rocket under a Yancy Schwartz mentorship.

Erin has written for or been featured in Mantra Magazine, Yoga Guide Magazine and Yoga Journal, as well as made many appearances on national and international media sources. These days, you can find her focusing her time on creating unique, informative, and stimulating classes, workshops ,and trainings, often with her teaching partner Steph Gongora.

A true artist by nature, Erin received a BFA in Oil Painting with a minor in Art History from The Maryland Institute College of Art. She is passionate about the idea that if we open our bodies up physically, we can tap into all sorts of creative, emotional, and psychological breakthroughs. Whether it’s with a paintbrush in hand or just through body movement, Erin is continuously creating her own form of art and expression and believes we all have this freedom of expression. www.erinkellyart.com
